Disney Afternoon Reactions

So since people tend to like my little commentary posts I do occasionally and I’ve never actually watched most Disney Afternoon shows (and have very limited memories of the ones I did watch), I thought it’d be fun to do a little project of going through and doing reactions of these shows

I’ll keep this post pinned and edit it to update how it’s going

Latest episode: The Sinister Sculptor (Adventures of the Gummi Bears Episode 2) (2/1293)

Filed under wiz-witch commentaries disney afternoon DuckTales because that is the whole reason I'm doing this

Just to make a point, every time I finished a panel of this I would export it as a PNG on the perceptual setting and use it as a color reference for the next panel

IT’S BAD

PLEASE CHECK YOUR COLOR SETTINGS

EDIT: If you’re still having problems, it might help to switch from “Save/Save as” to “Export (as a) Single Layer”. Just. Make SURE the box labeled “Expression Color” is set to RGB. I’ve been messing with this all day, and it looks like this combination of settings will allow exported PNGs to maintain their colors perfectly. To you. So far both Discord and Toyhouse still only display desaturated images and I cannot for the life of me figure out why

chthonic-pain:

chthonic-pain:

nobody warns you this but addiction happens without you noticing and one of the first things that it attacks is your ability to care. if you find yourself using recreational drugs every day, stop and take one day a week sober. if you struggle with this or if you don’t see the point of the exercise, you are likely already addicted and you need help.

nobody ever taught me the warning signs for drug addiction, only that “it costs lots of money and destroys your life!!!1” which is not helpful if you can’t recognize a developing addiction in yourself.

so here’s some things to watch out for with recreational drug use:

  • planning your day around drugs e.g “i’ll give myself an extra half hour before heading out so i can get high first”
  • rapidly switching emotions around drugs. you love them but you hate that you love them so much. you hate the way you feel on them but you hate being sober. feeling guilty after using even when you didn’t give a crap beforehand.
  • caring less about spending money. if you are budgeting for drugs like they are food, you are likely prioritizing them more than is healthy.
  • getting high to do household chores and other unpleasant things because it would suck less and be more bearable on drugs
  • feeling anxious or restless while sober, not knowing what to do with oneself, feeling lost or ungrounded.
  • thinking about doing drugs constantly even while sober. maybe it’s the first thing you think of when you wake up. maybe when you’re bored or otherwise have free time, drugs are one of the first things you can think of to occupy yourself with.
  • going to work or school while under the influence, especially if it happens regularly and if you’re seeing your performance suffer as a result.
  • the idea of taking a ‘tolerance break’ sounds good to you until it’s actually break time, at which point you can come up with 20 very reasonable sounding points to explain why it wouldn’t benefit you actually and you should just keep doing drugs regardless.
  • even if you succeed at quitting the drug, you keep your dealer’s number on your phone “just in case”
  • you pretend to be sober when you aren’t. you worry about other people noticing how much time you spend high. you make efforts to hide your drug use or minimize how much other people think you’re using. you’re scared of other people’s judgement if they were to find out.
  • you have mood swings laced with self-hatred, regret, financial worries, and guilt. these mood swings are then very quickly wiped away by feelings of “but it doesn’t matter, i can do what i want, and clearly i’m doing just fine while using drugs frequently”. news flash, if you are rapidly switching between feeling numb-ok and hating yourself more than anything because of your drug use, you are mentally ill.

yes this applies to weed. weed is a drug and you can get addicted to it like any other substance. addiction is not the same as physical dependence; it is psychological and it can happen to anyone. you are not immune to addiction.

One of the most interesting ways that Christocentrism rears it’s ugly head is when a Jewish person does something because of our religion and here come all the ex-xtian atheists to say “GOD DOESNT CARE IF YOU EAT PORK” or “YOURE NOT GONNA DIE IF YOU WORK ON SATURDAY”.

Like yeah, no shit. As a Jew I don’t fear god. I don’t think he is gonna impose consequences on me if I break his rules. That’s not how the relationship works.

If I do something because Jewish tradition says to, it’s because I’m honoring my community and keeping my culture alive. God doesn’t really enter the equation. He can have given us a rule, but if you know any Jews you know we have nine to eleven ways of following any rule and it depends on what suits us in the situation.

So if you slip a Jewish person trief to “show them” that nothing bad will happen to them, you are an asshole of the highest order and have fundamentally misunderstood the rule they’re seeking to follow.

Judaism does not include fear of God. It is a partnership with history and community and culture. And god can come, too, if he promises to be cool about it.

Also, sneaking something into someone’s food that they don’t usually eat? That they haven’t eaten in years? It can make them physically ill. That’s not Gd punishing them. It’s the entirely predictable consequences of ignoring someone’s boundaries around food.

I don’t abstain from pork because Gd. I abstain from pork because I’m a Jew. Please don’t give me food poisoning to “prove a point,” unless that point is “I shouldn’t trust you with anything of importance ever again.”

The new girl: what’s film?

Me: … film. Like… film that goes in a film camera.

New girl: what’s that mean?

Me: … before cameras were digital.

New girl: how did you do it before digital?

Me:… with film? I haven’t had enough coffee for this conversation

New girl: I need you to show me how to format the usb.

Me: format?

New girl: yeah what do I do?

Me: you… put the usb in. Then you make a new folder on it and rename it with (name, date, location)

New girl: but how do I do that?

Me: … they dont… teach you this anymore, do they?

The lack of computer skills is becoming a problem. Like there was a period of time where the older workers in office jobs had to be brought up to speed on computers, but now a lot of the newer workers have the issue too.

There’s a lot of assumed technical literacy because we had a whole generation brought up on desktop computers, but now it’s one that was brought up on phones, tablets, and chromebooks. Phones are easier to use, but that means the users have never had to work around the daily problems presented by most desktop environments.

But our systems are still set up assuming the kids are “digital natives” who just already know this stuff. So no one teaches them. So a new employee walks into the office… and they just don’t.

30-something here. And this is frightening for a few reasons.

Much of the back-end architecture will soon be more difficult to maintain, as those with the expertise retire or when the one guy volunteering to update a niche corner of some minute software function that holds up ¼ of the computer world dies.

While products are made to be “easier to use” now, which has made them more accessible, they aren’t made to last, contributing to tech pollution / e-waste. Many consumers don’t know how to upgrade or repair their own tech…if they are upgradeable.

Which brings me to my next point.

I bought a new low end laptop recently. Not chrome book, but actual Windows PC laptop. I haven’t had a personal computer for a while and with a lot of expectation to “return to the office” because COVID’s over, right? *heavy eye roll*, I wanted something cheap and portable. I found a deal because a lot of low end laptops are being discounted because school children aren’t remote now. I was actually looking for refurbished but found what I wanted cheaper new, sadly.

Finding one that I knew would run the software I needed or that wouldn’t be bogged down just with Windows? A challenge. You’ve got to know what RAM, HDD vs eMMC vs SSD, cores, age of processors, and all those specs mean.

Finding one that wasn’t Windows in “S mode,” a bullshit mode that locks you into the Windows app / store for ALL software (where they take a cut of each purchase)? Even more challenging.

When I booted it up…I imagine most people just click yes through things because why not, just want to get right to it, right?

The amount of privileges I had to decline because of targeted data collection, for ad preferences and other nefarious reasons; the number of easy-to-miss “no thanks” options to decline enrollment in bloatware; the number of things that wanted me to launch the free trial, where they could automatically enroll me into a monthly PAID subscription and could report failure to add a credit card to pay for it to credit agencies (!); many of these presented as the “recommended” or default option… ASTOUNDING.

And then I still had to go into system settings and turn off additional data tracking that they didn’t even present during set-up, along with bloatware bullshit programs they wanted to always run at start-up. Because I knew where to go and find that stuff. Don’t even get me starting on fucking Cortana.

Technology has gotten bad. Even 10 years ago, it was a couple simple agreements not to pirate, using software at your own risk, etc. and that was it.

Now? Waiving rights, arbitration, hidden terms that could leave you owing money if you don’t uninstall it, data collection to link accounts and literally track every move / your exact location / your usage, attempts to personalize ads through your specific searches, inability to block cookies unless you download a Google app!?, four pop ups for every website, as the default?

It is scary how much tech that was designed to increase productivity and make life easier has become yet another way for corporations to track us, sell to us, and sell their data on us, even potentially incriminating us.

Oh, and heaven forbid you know what you’re doing and try to upgrade or repair your equipment yourself. Warranty voiding? Should be illegal, may be illegal in some areas, but they still tell you it’ll void your warranty. Good luck finding the parts. Using non-OEM parts will void the warranty too…by design.

I did not survive Windows Vista era to deal with this bullshit.

Anyone have any resources for technology literacy for beginners?

Yes! @aquadraco20

General basic safety

How to avoid ransomware, malware, hacks, and how to maintain good data privacy.

https://www.getsafeonline.org/

^ this has intermediate information (as well as beginner info) that I think people who grew up on the internet benefit most from (so it won’t tell you what a phone is, or how to press the power button to turn on a computer). I recommend all sections the personal section under the top drop down (except the one aimed at children).

https://edu.gcfglobal.org/en/internetsafety/

Same deal as above, with quizzes and additional topics.

https://www.digitalliteracyassessment.org/

^ this one is mostly video and audio which some people might helpful

HTML

https://www.w3schools.com/html/default.asp

W3schools is a well known free resource for coding. I recommend HTML because it gives basic website building capabilities, so you can create a neocities website for example or even edit your Tumblr theme. You can also learn CSS (used with HTML to make prettier websites) and Python (used to make programs).

Touch typing

Touch typing is using the home row on keyboards. It allows people to type faster than pressing individual keys one at a time, like on a smart phone.

https://www.typingclub.com/

This site has lessons, and honestly looks much nicer than the program I learned to use touch typing with.

https://www.how-to-type.com/touch-typing-lessons/how-to-type-home-keys/

This site has lessons and practice tests and speed tests to measure progress. In middle school I was taking a practice test about three times a week and a speed test once a week for about fifteen minutes each time, if that helps.

These three areas are the main things people were taught in computer literacy courses.

I also recommend checking your local library or other educational resources (like local colleges, your current college/highschool/middle school etc, the college you graduated from). These can have in person instructors which can be super helpful. Feel free to send me any questions and stuff, if I don’t already know I’ll try to find out and share where I found it!

Helpful things I’ve done with my windows computer to make it safer/more efficient:

  • Installing Malwarebytes/enabling windows defender
  • Creating a backup of my computer on a hard drive
  • Setting permissions for apps to start on startup
  • Getting a password manager
  • Installing a web browser that isn’t chrome
  • Changing old passwords into better, more secure passwords- especially websites that have debit card info

I hope this helps :D

THIS!!

THIS IS AN AMAZING WAY TO THINK OF CHRONIC PAIN

I wanted to point out that Nurse Hadley, the woman in this video, is a hospice nurse. This is what people say to and about patients who don’t have long left to live. The fear of addiction and dependence on pain medication is so strong that people deny their literally dying family members proper pain management. You’re never going to please the “but what about addiction” people, ignore them and take the meds you need to function.

When I’m not in pain I literally forget to take pain medication, I am not an addiction risk in that regard.

I’ve learned that if I put the lidocaine patches on my face when my head starts to hurt, the migraine often never fully gets going. The postdrome happens, but the actual headache fizzles. If I wait until the migraine is established, I have to put the patches on and then sleep long enough for the migraine to go away.

If I overdo it and then take half an oxycodone, the next day is going to be ten times easier than if I just tough it out and flare.

One thing I always tend to say to people about the idea of people with chronic pain getting addicted to pain meds is “yeah, they’re addicted to not being in pain”

I have a few flare up conditions and I was told to take a dose of pain meds whenever the warning signs show up before the actual pain does–if I wait until after the pain’s shown up, I need to take a double dose and it still won’t even touch the pain unless the stars are aligned and I can just go lay down moaning

Let people have their pain meds and leave them alone

Hey kids, wanna learn what signs of botulism look like?

Since the sell by date wasn’t for another 4 days I returned them. I was checking out at the store and I was like “i’m not sure you want to take them out of the bag” and he did and a passing manager was just like “That looks like a bomb, I’m just gonna take it to the back” and was off like a shot.

Okay but seriously, if you have a package of food like this or especially if you have a can that is bulging like this, it is literally full of poison, do not open it and absolutely positively do not eat it under any circumstances.

Any food packaging that is bulging has to be considered unsafe to eat. A lot of people who might be living on their own for the first time don’t know what that looks like, and this is a really, really extreme example, but yeah if the top of a can has become slightly domed from internal pressure that’s going to kill you, don’t eat it.

I’m full on zero tolerance for callout stuff, but I see sometimes “don’t send me a random callout without proof,” and here’s the thing - the proof is always like a discord screenshot with a mildly disagreeable fandom opinion or some ancient stupid thing or personal life stuff that shouldn’t matter and really everyone passing around callout stuff calls everything equally damning equally irrefutable evidence.

And the fact of the matter is that life is too short to dig through some stranger’s dirty underwear at the demand of another stranger who collected it, just so I can stay morally pure by not reblogging their posts. It’s an ugly act and it’s very unpleasant to ask someone else to be be a part of it. So I won’t and I think that’s a healthy decision.

Honestly the only time I really give a fuck is if someone’s, you know, repeating Nazi shit. If you can’t show me someone’s Nazi opinions, then … leave me alone.

if you want to send me like a “hey I’m pretty sure that post doesn’t mean what you think it does, you should check (location on their blog that is currently active)”, or “this person seems to be a Nazi/TERF/radfem/otherwise holds opinions you have openly expressed are distasteful to you here”, that’s fine- but do so with the expectation that I can and will do whatever I want with that information, including ignoring it outright, and that even if I do act on it I will very likely never post what you sent me or say anything else about it.

it’s one thing to say “you should look into this further because it is relevant” with the understanding that you may be wrong and that it’s okay to disagree with you.

but the threatening language, the moral purity tests, and the unearthing of private information and personal lives are actively harmful to any and all efforts to cultivate a non-punitive, non-carceral, culture of restorative justice.

I have the rule that if you want to show me actual proof of someone’s wrongdoing, you need to dm me ans not just send me a random anon. Can’t do that? Then I’m just gunna delete your ask.

Tumblr is currently serving me an ad for “Voda, the LGBTQ mental health app” offering “daily meditations, self-care and AI advice” and as a therapist I am begging you not to download an app where an AI tries to help you with your mental health. Please do not. They tried to have an AI chatbot counsel eating disorder patients and it told them to diet. That shit is not safe. Do not talk to an AI about your mental health please. You don’t need to talk to a professional but talk to a PERSON.

Edited to add: OK, it’s been a long day and I wrote this when I only had the information that was in the ad. It looks like they may not actually have a chatbot, but something that just… churns out pre-programmed advice? That’s genuinely a lot safer! But calling it “AI advice” feels a little misleading. This app may be perfectly fine and safe to use, but should probably stick to the fundamentals that people want from a mental health app and not try to use AI hype to market, since the intersection of AI and mental health support is VERY DICEY and bad shit has happened there before. And you should probably do further research on how they are using your data, since that is also an area where mental health support apps have gone bad before.

umm btw stuart semple (guy who made the pinkest pink and the blackest black)  is super into nfts now so

Probably a good time to remember that while the AnishKapoorThingTM  is funny,  Kapoor wasn’t particularly restricting the use of Vantablack beyond standard businessartist boilerplate.  Semple made it into a big thing and a meme to boost his own publicity.  It worked, and AFAIK Kapoor couldn’t really care less, but…not really a nice thing to do.   I’m not surprised he’s jumped on the NFT crypto tuliptrain.

yeah, people in the notes have obviously been talking about but the anish Kapoor thing was kinda unwarranted harrassment of a Jewish Indian artist who’s worst crime was being a lil pretentious. also I feel like it should be noted: Anish Kapoor is not only not into nfts but he has had his art stolen and sold as nfts multiple times so ,,

I’m not sure how to say this, but I’m annoyed at how this post finds out that Semple is on the Bad Side of a known issue and immediately sets to reversing the narrative between him and Kapoor. Maybe Kapoor was a chill guy all along and didn’t deserve the reputation he got, I don’t know, but in this context it feels more like a human craving for narrative symmetry. The good guy is bad now, so the bad guy must be good? Highlighting his race and religion to emphasize victimhood and its associated requisite goodness? It just… Doesn’t feel great to read, somehow.

I mean this is not the first time people have talked about this. The narrative was flipped long before NFTs were even popular. People are just mentioning it on this post to remind others that this isn’t his first dick move.

Yeah I’ve been screaming about it for a while.

Like, just bc AK is a dick doesn’t mean people can’t be racist and antisemitic towards him. 🤷‍♂️

Hi, @7outerelements! I’m one of the aforementioned bloggers known for routinely screaming into the void about the misinformation that fuelled the Semple/Kapoor feud, and I promise you this has nothing to do with “narrative symmetry” as it relates to the NFT issue, nor does it boil down to using race and ethnoreligious affiliation to emphasise victimhood.

In fact, if you go to my #TEAM KAPOOR tag, you’ll see I’ve been yelling about this since 2017, meaning it can’t be about finding narrative symmetry in relation to recent events, because NFTs did not even exist five years ago.

This is basically a rehash/repost of what’s already in that tag, but just for posterity:

  • Vantablack is a substance that is extremely expensive and difficult to make. To quote this article: “It’s not a pigment or a paint, you can’t just buy a bucket of it and dip a brush in and slather it onto your walls. The nanotubes that make up Vantablack must be grown in the Surrey NanoSystems lab using a complicated (and patented) process involving several machines, a few layers of different substances, and some extreme heat. From start to finish, applying Vantablack to an object can take up to two days.” For this reason, the company—nobody elsedecided to only work with one artist, and they chose Kapoor. They even said they would reassess the exclusivity agreement if things changed, but that—because it was such a new and potentially dangerous material—they wanted to have control over how it was used. This is not stuff that was going to be readily available to the masses for at-home use; it’s literally shit that could be used in paramilitary black ops.
  • Semple knew all of this, yet he deliberately chose to misrepresent the details of Kapoor’s Vantablack agreement to the greater public, and then harnessed all the outrage he manufactured to sell a line of pigments that he’d already been developing (no, the “Pinkest Pink” was not actually made in response to Kapoor).
  • Semple also allowed everyone to think he was this great underdog proletarian hero, when in actuality, he was already a fairly well-established artist who had semi-recently been accused of not paying his employees.
  • While I don’t think it was a deliberate move, Semple’s twisting of the truth ending up making it so that a lot of people were very comfortable using language that sounded kinda dogwhistle-y when applied to an Indian Jewish immigrant.
  • Semple saw/heard that language being applied to Kapoor and continued to encourage the hate-fest without any retraction because his paints were selling.
  • And now the bloke is into NFTs, which are ten kinds of terrible, and all I can say is I’M NOT SURPRISED.

Now, none of this means Kapoor is therefore a great guy, or even a good artist. I’m lukewarm on a lot of his work, tbh. It just means, if you are going to dislike Kapoor, you ought to do it for legitimate reasons, none of which should have anything to do with Semple’s manufactured outrage over Vantablack.

So no, it’s not about narrative symmetry, or emphasising minority status as a symbol of goodness. It’s just about me and few others being pissed at Semple over this Vantablack stuff for like literally five years now, and being glad he’s finally getting called out for some of his shit.

That’s it.

Send Post, TEAM KAPOOR OUT.

Edit to add: This does not mean you should go on Twitter and bully Stuart Semple for being involved with NFTs, jfc. I will add that his team (he’s apparently taking a break from social media due to the backlash) are now claiming he’s not into NFTs, though a lot of his previous tweets negate that, in my personal interpretation. But regardless, cyberbulling is bad; it was bad when Semple encouraged people to do it to Kapoor, and it’s bad now. I am annoyed that Semple twisted a narrative for his own personal gain and didn’t back down from it, and I think he should come clean on that, but ffs asking for accountability =/= sending people threats on Twitter. Don’t fucking do that.

I’ve been yelling about Semples lies about Kapoor for a long time… There are very few certainties in life, but one of them is that Semple Lies…

He is good at driving traffic to his sales platforms, and invents a good story if none exists, let’s not forget Freetone which is a grift with a “for the people” narrative woven from whole cloth. What a successful lie come viral advertising.
